South Africa: Multi-faith peace conference promotes social cohesion

Religious leaders of the various faith-based communities took time to address the occasion highlighting keys points on co-existence and how each religious community has the power to influence change to make the world a safer and better place for everyone, irrespective of nationality, race or gender.

A multi-faith peace conference was held at the Durban City Hall by the Minhaj-ul-Quran International South Africa on Sunday. The goal of the conference was to foster inter-faith tolerance, promote social cohesion and counter all forms of extremist tendencies as well as advocate for Human Rights.

Religious leaders of the various faith-based communities took time to address the occasion highlighting keys points on co-existence and how each religious community has the power to influence change to make the world a safer and better place for everyone, irrespective of nationality, race or gender.

The keynote speaker was world renowned Islamic scholar, Dr Hassan Mohi-ud-Din Al-Qadri who is also the chairman of the Supreme Council of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, which is one of the largest NGOs in South Asia.

Lifetime Achievement Awards were also be bestowed upon retired Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Natal, Bishop Rubin Phillips, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman and Mr AV Mahomed.

“The turn out could have been better had it not been a long weekend. People go out of town for family activities and holidays. Moreover, the road closures for the cycle race put off many people from attending. However, I am satisfied that we achieved our objectives which was to demonstrate that people of different religious persuasions and cultural backgrounds can work together for social cohesion and the upliftment of society. Religious leaders faith based communities played a critical role during the struggle against apartheid and need to continue being a catalyst in the fight against racism, xenophobia and societal challenges like poverty and crime,” said Moulana Rafeek Shah.
