Purifying the Heart: A Spiritual Journey to Divine Presence

The heart can only contain one love at one time: either the love of this dunya (world) or the love of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Shaykh Hammad Mustafa Al-madani Al-qadri

Only those who remove the love of this dunya, its temptations, and its desires from their hearts — only then does Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala place His love and affection in their hearts. Shaykh Hammad Mustafa Al-qadri

Introduction:

In an era defined by the relentless pursuit of more, more wealth, more influence, and more luxury, we often find our inner selves feeling increasingly hollow. Our hearts have become crowded marketplaces, filled with the noise of worldly desires. But what if the secret to true peace and divine proximity lies not in what we gain, but in what we are willing to let go? The core of spiritual growth is understanding a simple yet profound truth: the human heart is a vessel designed for a single, ultimate devotion.

The Price of Divine Presence:

The sources recount a powerful encounter between some pious individuals and a man who appeared poor, wearing patched clothing. Thinking he was in need, they offered him 100 dirhams. To their surprise, the man revealed that he had once been immensely wealthy and powerful, but he had intentionally given away 70,000 gold coins and all his properties for the sake of Allah. He asked them how they could possibly try to buy the “presence of Allah” he had achieved with such a meager amount.
This story serves as a stark reminder that spiritual “presence” isn't something that can be bought with money; it is earned through the sacrifice of worldly attachments.

The Law of Exclusion:

The central message of the discourse is that the heart is a singular space. The heart can only contain one love at one time: either the love of this dunya (the world) or the love of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Just as a vessel cannot be full of two opposing liquids at once, our hearts cannot truly host the divine love if they are overflowing with the temptations and distractions of material gain. To make room for the Creator, we must first clear out the clutter of the creation.

The Journey of Purification:

Attaining the love of Allah is described as a deliberate process. First, one must remove the desires of this world from the heart. Only then does Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala place His own desire, affection (Mahabbah), and mercy in the seeker's heart.
This isn't an overnight transformation; it requires years of striving and cultivating that divine love before one is finally granted proximity in the Divine Court. It is the path of the “Futuwwa” and the “Auliya” those who prioritize the eternal over the temporary.

Conclusion:

We are often lost in the pursuit of wealth and power, believing they will bring us fulfillment. However, the path to true success requires us to purify our hearts and souls from these very temptations. By choosing to prioritize the love of Allah over the fleeting charms of this world, we open the door to a level of peace and presence that no amount of gold can ever buy. The choice is ours: will we fill our hearts with the world, or will we make room for the Divine?
