The historic tragedy of Karbala and the selfless sacrifices made by Imam Hussain (AS) and the blessed family members of the Holy Prophet (SAW) holds many valuable lessons for the Muslim nation. It is needless to say that Sayyida Zaynab (AS) is one of the pivotal personalities whose courage, integrity and steadfastness during this tragedy, has set a great example for Muslim women.

It is in her memory that the Minhaj Women League Sheffield arranged a beautiful event entitled Sayyida Zaynab (AS) conference, which took place on the 16th of October. The event began with a heart-touching recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by melodious nasheeds and poetry in remembrance of the beloved family of the Holy Prophet (saw) and the sacrifices they made in Karbala.

Zahra Hussain then delivered an English talk, introducing the life of Sayyida Zaynab (AS) and discussing the contribution Sayyida Zaynab (AS) made within Islamic history, in particular the role she played during, and more importantly after, the tragedy of Karbala. Zahra mentioned that Sayyida Zaynab (AS) represents an ideology of women empowerment and elimination of oppression and tyranny.

Despite the difficulties Sayyida Zaynab (AS) faced, she remained steadfast to protect the religion of Islam from falling into the hands of the oppressors and continued to uphold and propagate the peaceful and just message of Islam. Sayyida Zaynab (AS) set us an example, that we as women have a responsibility to not only empower ourselves with knowledge but to then represent, propagate and protect the peaceful message of Islam. Sayyida Zaynab (AS) taught us that this responsibility carries with it many difficulties, however through patience, courage and steadfastness, Allah will open up the doors of success for us.

Thereafter, Sister Shahida Ulhaq (MWL Sheffield President) delivered a powerful talk in Urdu. Sayyida Zaynab’s (AS) life was discussed from birth to adulthood, highlighting her character, her intelligence and her greatness. This was followed by the narration of the event of Karbala and the courage displayed by Sayyida Zaynab (AS) in the Sermon she delivered in front of Yazeed and his men. Sister Shahida reminded the attendees of the importance of sacrificing some of their time for the sake of Islam.

The event was concluded with Salaam upon the Holy Prophet (saw), his companions, and family and an emotional Dua.

May Allah SWT shower His infinite blessings upon the most esteemed family of the Holy Prophet (SAW) and give us the ability to follow the footsteps of Sayyida Zaynab (AS).
