A Muslim organisation in Forest Gate held a meeting on female empowerment at its education centre in Romford Road.
The meeting of Minhaj-ul-Quran was led by the president of its UK women league, Sister Fatima Mash’hadi, on February 23, ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8.
They discussed how the league can build strong Muslim women and play an important role in the community.
Sister Mash’hadi spoke about how Minhaj-ul-Quran’s leader, Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, established the organisation’s women league 26 years ago to empower women with an independent platform to work for the promotion of women’s rights in Islam.
Shakila Ali, a league volunteer, said: “We hold fun days and raise money for different causes. Recently we raised money for an orphanage, for Syria and for sport in Africa. We also run study classes and sewing classes.
“We have sisters from all sorts of backgrounds among our volunteers. It helps a lot of women.
“We’ve had people from the NHS talk to women about mental health.
“We hold interfaith events with people from different religions, where we discuss issues facing the local community.
“We support all the different activities that Minhaj-ul-Quran undertakes. For example, welfare officers are organising an event, Climbing Mount Snowden, to raise money for the Minhaj Welfare Foundation and we’re encouraging sisters and their families to take part.”
